Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, was also associated with the moon, nature, and childbirth. She was the daughter of Jupiter and Latona, and the twin sister of Apollo. Diana was a skilled and fearless hunter, and she was worshipped by hunters and other people who lived in rural areas. One of the most famous stories about Diana is the myth of Actaeon. Actaeon was a young hunter who accidentally came across Diana while she was bathing. Diana was furious at Actaeon for seeing her naked, and she transformed him into a stag. Actaeon's own hunting dogs then chased him and killed him. Diana's relationship to the hunt is complex. On the one hand, she was a skilled and fearless hunter herself. On the other hand, she was also a protector of animals. Diana's role as a hunting goddess was to ensure that the hunt was conducted in a respectful and sustainable manner. She also punished those who hunted excessively or cruelly.
